Why Queiroz added a fourth goalkeeper to squad

Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has defended his decision to include a fourth goalkeeper in Ghana’s World Cup camp, describing the move as a crucial part of both the team’s tournament strategy and the long-term development of Ghanaian football.

The veteran tactician announced a 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup but revealed that an additional goalkeeper will travel and train with the team throughout the tournament despite not being officially registered among the final squad.

According to Queiroz, the goalkeeper position requires special attention during short competitions such as the World Cup because replacing an injured goalkeeper at short notice can be extremely challenging.

“When the World Cup starts, football stops. Players are no longer training with their clubs, so bringing in an unprepared goalkeeper becomes almost impossible,” he explained.

The coach noted that the extra goalkeeper provides immediate cover in case of injury while also serving as an investment in the future of Ghana football.

Queiroz described the player as a talented young goalkeeper with enormous potential and said the arrangement forms part of a broader programme aimed at developing the next generation of Ghanaian shot-stoppers.

The Black Stars coach also dismissed suggestions that the approach was unusual, revealing that he had adopted similar measures during previous World Cup campaigns with other national teams.

Meanwhile, Queiroz addressed the absence of experienced defender Alexander Djiku, who was forced out of the squad after suffering an injury during a cup final.

He admitted losing Djiku was disappointing but expressed confidence in replacement Derrick Luckassen, who was drafted in after careful assessment of available options.

The coach stressed that winning major tournaments requires more than a strong starting eleven.

“You can win games with 22 players, but to become champions you need a full squad ready,” he said.

Queiroz believes every member of his squad has a role to play and insists Ghana now has sufficient depth and balance across all departments as the Black Stars prepare to challenge for success at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
