Marc-André Ter Stegen has received approval from Barcelona to complete a loan move to AFC Ajax, in a deal expected to see the experienced goalkeeper become a key figure in the Dutch club’s plans for the upcoming season.
Reports indicate that Barcelona have given the formal green light for the transfer, allowing Ter Stegen to seek regular playing time away from Camp Nou.
The move forms part of Ajax’s efforts to rebuild and strengthen their squad as they prepare for a more competitive campaign.
Ter Stegen, 33, has been Barcelona’s first-choice goalkeeper for several years after joining the club from German side Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2014.
The German international has made more than 400 appearances for the Catalan giants and has played a major role in some of the club’s biggest successes over the past decade.
During his time at Barcelona, Ter Stegen won several major trophies, including multiple La Liga titles, Copa del Rey trophies and the UEFA Champions League in the 2014/15 season.
Known for his excellent distribution, composure under pressure and shot-stopping ability, he has been regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in world football.
However, injuries and competition for the position have affected his recent seasons at Barcelona.
The club’s decision to allow him to leave temporarily is believed to be aimed at helping him regain consistent playing time while also managing their squad situation.
The Dutch giants have also reportedly completed the signing of striker Marcos Leonardo as part of their rebuilding plans.
Meanwhile, negotiations are continuing with the aim of bringing in Moroccan midfielder Azzedine Ounahi.
