Tanzania is moving forward with preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and is now looking to involve former football superstar Didier Drogba in a major promotional role for the tournament.
According to reports, President Samia Suluhu Hassan is keen to appoint the former Ivory Coast striker as an ambassador for AFCON 2027, which will be co-hosted by Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.
The move is part of efforts to raise the global profile of the tournament and attract more attention to East Africa’s first-ever hosting of Africa’s biggest football competition.
Drogba, one of Africa’s most iconic footballers, has already been involved in early discussions after being invited by Tanzania’s Minister of Sports, Paul Makonda.
The former Chelsea star reportedly took part in meetings focused on how best to promote AFCON 2027 across Africa and internationally.
Drogba is widely respected across the continent for his achievements in football and his influence off the pitch. During his playing career, he became a symbol of African excellence, winning major trophies and leading the Ivory Coast on the international stage. Since retiring, he has also been active in charity work and football development projects.
AFCON 2027 will be a historic edition of the tournament. It will be the first time in history that three countries jointly host the competition under a shared East African bid known as “Pamoja,” meaning “together” in Swahili.
The tournament is expected to take place from June to July 2027 and will feature 24 national teams from across Africa.
Tanzania is investing heavily in infrastructure, including modern stadiums and training facilities, as it prepares for the tournament.
One of the key venues includes the Samia Suluhu Hassan Stadium in Arusha, which is currently under construction for the event.
Officials believe that bringing in a global football figure like Drogba would help boost tourism, increase international interest, and inspire young players across the region.
His possible role as ambassador is seen as a major step in strengthening the visibility of AFCON 2027 worldwide.
