Jorge Jesus has defended his recent comments suggesting that some players within a squad have a different status, insisting that he does not regret making the remarks.
The experienced Portuguese coach was asked whether he wished he had used different words when discussing the varying status of players.
His response was emphatic, saying he remained convinced of his position.
“No. Zero, I continue to think the same way. There are players with status, that’s as clear as day,” Jesus said.
However, the coach stressed that having greater status or prominence within a team does not mean those players are exempt from the rules governing the squad.
“And then the rules are the same for everyone,” he added.
Jesus explained that this has been his approach throughout his managerial career and that he intends to maintain the same philosophy.
“I’ve always thought this way in my career and I’ll continue to think that way,” he stated during a press conference after Ronaldo, Portugal captain exits the national team camp amid controversies over his playing time.
The comments highlight Jesus’ view that a football squad can contain players with different levels of experience, reputation and influence while still operating under a common set of rules.
Jesus has enjoyed a long managerial career across Portugal and other countries, winning domestic league titles and continental honours with clubs including Benfica, Flamengo and Al Hilal.
