The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a 46-year-old former professional boxer, Michael Ayitey Okai, also known as “Ayitey Powers,” over an alleged threat of death against the Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Mr Yaw Ampofo.
According to a police statement dated August 24, 2026, the arrest followed the circulation of a video on social media in which the former boxer is alleged to have issued the threat against the NSA Director-General.
The police said Michael Ayitey Okai is currently in custody and assisting with investigations into the matter.
The Accra Regional Police Command said its decision to arrest the suspect was part of efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged threat and determine the appropriate action in accordance with the law.
The Command assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that all necessary steps will be taken based on the outcome of the inquiry.
The police also urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading information that has not been verified.
The police statement did not provide further details about what allegedly led to the threat or the exact circumstances surrounding the video.
The police have not indicated whether the suspect has been charged or when he is expected to appear before court.
Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as “Ayitey Powers,” is a former professional boxer who represented Ghana in boxing and has remained a known figure in the country’s sporting community.
