The Upper West Regional Police Command has arrested six people suspected of being involved in a number of armed robbery and Mobile Money (MoMo) theft cases in parts of the Wa West District and Wa Municipality.
The arrests came after months of intelligence gathering and coordinated operations aimed at breaking up the suspected robbery group.
According to the Police, the suspects allegedly attacked their victims with machetes and forced them to give out the PINs to their MoMo accounts.
The suspects then allegedly used the PINs to transfer money from the victims’ accounts into MoMo accounts believed to be controlled by the group.
The six suspects have been identified as 35-year-old Amadu Moro, 40-year-old Adama Yussif, 35-year-old Iddrissu Adama, 20-year-old Korika Issaka, 21-year-old Zakaria Brigi and 52-year-old Nasiru Abdul Rahman.
The Police said their initial investigations have connected some of the suspects, including Adama Yussif, Amadu Moro and Nasiru Abdul Rahman, to several robbery incidents recorded in the area.
These include an incident at Kpenateng Junction on August 1, Kulkpara-Dapoha on June 19, Kpenateng Community on June 15, and Piisi-Dapoha on March 27, 2026.
The Police said the suspects allegedly took about GH¢22,070 in cash from their victims. Another GH¢3,274 was reportedly transferred through the victims’ MoMo accounts.
Seven mobile phones were also recovered from the suspects. The phones have been seized by the Police and are being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.
The Police, however, said Nasiru Abdul Rahman was injured during the operation and died shortly after arriving at the Upper West Regional Hospital.
His body has been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary, where it will be preserved and subjected to an autopsy.
Meanwhile, two other people believed to be part of the suspected group are still on the run.
They are 30-year-old Haruna, who the Police allege serves as the group’s armourer, and 24-year-old Amadu Mahamudu, who is the son of the deceased suspect.
The Upper West Regional Police Command has asked residents, especially those living in communities recently affected by robberies, to stay alert and report any suspicious people, movements or activities to the Police.
The Command has also appealed to the public to provide reliable information that could help the Police find the two wanted suspects and prevent similar criminal activities in the region.
