My journey from running mate to former Vice President is by God’s divine will – Bawumia

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has urged Ghanaians to remain patient and accepting of the will of Allah, saying the changing nature of power and life demonstrates that no position is permanent.

Speaking at the 2026 National Maulid organised by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, at Fadama, Dr. Bawumia reflected on his political journey and that of President John Dramani Mahama.

Dr. Bawumia said he had attended the National Maulid over the years in different capacities, first as a running mate, later as Vice President and now as a former Vice President.

He noted that President Mahama had similarly attended the gathering as Vice President, President, former President and, by the grace of Allah, returned to office as President.

According to Dr. Bawumia, the changing political fortunes of the two leaders demonstrate the sovereignty and power of Allah.

Quoting Quran 3:26, he said: “Say, O Allah, Owner of Sovereignty, You give sovereignty to whom You will, and You take sovereignty away from whom You will.”

He urged Ghanaians to remain humble and patient, noting that circumstances can change at any time.

“Today you may be up, tomorrow you may be down. Today you may have, tomorrow you may not,” he said.

The 2026 National Maulid, which commemorates the birth of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), brought together Muslim scholars, Imams, Chiefs, delegations from other West African countries and a representative of President Mahama.

Dr. Bawumia also encouraged Muslims, particularly the youth, to emulate the Prophet’s values of peace, unity, humility and discipline, while promoting peaceful relations with people of other faiths.
