SIM reregistration exercise to begin by end of 2026 – Sam George

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has announced that preparations are far advanced for a new nationwide SIM re-registration exercise, which is expected to begin before the end of 2026.

According to the minister, the exercise is part of government efforts to improve the country’s digital identity system, strengthen security within the telecommunications sector, and reduce fraud involving mobile phone users.

He explained that although the exercise has not yet started, important steps are being taken behind the scenes to ensure a smooth and successful rollout. These include obtaining the necessary approvals and putting the required legal framework in place.

Speaking in an interview on Saturday, June 6, 2026, Sam George revealed that the government has already secured regulatory approval to begin the procurement process for the digital platform that will support the SIM re-registration exercise.

“Just yesterday, Friday, June 5, we received clearance from the PPA to start the procurement process, and we are also at the Attorney General’s office, so we can have a proper legal regime to do the registration, and so the LI is currently with the AG’s department.

“We are hopeful that by the time we will be done with the procurement processes for the platform, we would have finished with the AG, laid the LI in Parliament and have it mature, and I am hopeful that by the end of year, we will be in position to go.”

The minister expressed confidence that once the procurement process is completed and the necessary legal requirements are approved by Parliament, the government will be ready to launch the exercise.

If all processes go according to plan, Ghanaians can expect the nationwide SIM re-registration exercise to begin by the end of 2026.
