The Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team (CVET) has arrested a 49-year-old TikTok content creator, Rita Konadu, popularly known as “Mamaone,” over alleged offensive and derogatory remarks directed at President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama.
Rita Konadu, who uses the TikTok handle mamaone1, was arrested at Juaben in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday.
Authorities say she is being transported to Accra to assist with ongoing investigations and to undergo the necessary legal processes.
Although officials have confirmed the arrest, they have not yet disclosed the specific charges that may be brought against her. It also remains unclear when she will be arraigned before a court.
According to reports, the investigation stems from videos allegedly posted on TikTok in which the suspect made offensive comments about the President and the First Lady.
The Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team is expected to examine the content as part of its investigation before determining the next legal steps.
The arrest is the latest in a series of actions taken by the government against social media personalities accused of publishing offensive, threatening or false content online.
In recent months, several TikTok users have been arrested and prosecuted over content targeting public officials, raising discussions about responsible use of social media and the limits of free speech.
While some Ghanaians have welcomed the enforcement of laws governing online conduct, others have expressed concerns about protecting freedom of expression.
Legal experts continue to stress that although citizens have the constitutional right to express their opinions, that right must be exercised responsibly and within the boundaries of the law.
