Obuasi SHS head accused of sexual abuse is NDC Juaben secretary

The headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School, Zakaria Abdulai, who has been suspended over allegations of sexually abusing female students, is also the serving secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Juaben constituency and is seeking to become the constituency chairman.

Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni disclosed this on Thursday, October 15, while discussing findings from his documentary on this issue.

According to Manasseh, he discovered the headmaster’s political position during his investigations in the community.

He said Mr Abdulai was reportedly preparing to contest the chairmanship position at the party’s constituency delegates’ conference, expected before the end of the year.

The journalist also raised concerns about what he described as the widespread knowledge of the allegations among residents and some NDC members, despite an apparent reluctance to speak publicly about the matter.

He cited comments from former NDC constituency executive Frederick Addai, who reportedly said some party members had attempted to calm tensions and resolve the issue whenever the allegations emerged.

Manasseh further claimed that officials within the school and the Ghana Education Service (GES), at both district and regional levels, had been aware of the reports but failed to take adequate action.

He suggested that the headmaster’s position and connections in the NDC may have contributed to the lack of decisive action, although the allegations remain subject to investigation.

On October 13, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu directed the GES to suspend Mr Abdulai pending a full investigation.

The minister also requested a separate investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police Service.

The investigations are expected to establish the facts surrounding the allegations and determine whether any further action is warranted. The allegations against Mr Abdulai have not, in the information provided, been established as proven findings.
