Obuasi SHS abuse: Parliament demands speedy prosecution

The Parliament of Ghana’s Committee on Human Rights has condemned alleged sexual abuse at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), calling for a speedy prosecution of the case.

In a press statement dated October 15, 2026, the Committee said it had taken notice of a Joy News investigation exposing allegations of sexual abuse at the school.

The Committee said the alleged conduct of the school’s headmaster violated Sections 2 and 13 of the Children’s Act, 1998, as well as Article 34 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

It commended the Minister of Education and the Ghana Education Service for the swift interdiction and suspension of the school’s headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, and another housemaster, as well as the commencement of a police investigation.

The Committee urged school authorities, management and staff of educational institutions across the country to uphold the highest ethical and professional standards in their dealings with students.

It also called on the justice system to fast-track the prosecution and apply the maximum sentence if the headmaster is found guilty, saying this would serve as a deterrent to potential offenders.

The Committee, chaired by Kumawu MP Ernest Yaw Anim, said it would monitor the investigation and prosecution as part of its oversight responsibilities.
