NUGS urges gov’t, teacher unions to end pre-tertiary strike

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has appealed to the government and pre-tertiary teacher unions to urgently resolve their outstanding disputes over salaries, conditions of service and allowances.

The call follows the ongoing strike by pre-tertiary teacher unions, which has disrupted teaching and learning in schools across the country.

In a statement issued on October 2, 2026, NUGS acknowledged the concerns raised by the unions but cautioned that a prolonged industrial action could have significant consequences for students.

According to the student body, although strikes are a legitimate means of pressing demands on labour-related matters, their impact on education must also be considered.

NUGS said continued disruption at the pre-tertiary level could affect the academic progress of pupils, particularly because basic education provides the foundation for future learning and development.

It therefore urged the government to intensify discussions with the teacher unions and pursue a solution that addresses the concerns of teachers while protecting students from further disruption.

The student body also called on the unions to approach the negotiations in good faith and remain committed to finding a sustainable resolution.

“Teachers deserve fair and dignified conditions of service, while students deserve uninterrupted access to quality education,” NUGS said.

NUGS stressed that the interests of Ghanaian children should remain central to the negotiations and appealed to both sides to reach an agreement as soon as possible.
