Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Rev. Ntim Fordjour, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to take decisive action in response to recent drug trafficking cases linked to Ghana.
According to Rev. Fordjour, the government must demonstrate stronger leadership and accountability within the security and drug enforcement chain, particularly given the scale of concerns surrounding the cases.
He questioned why no head of an agency involved in the security and drug enforcement system had been removed despite the developments.
“No, the government hasn’t acted. Who has been fired? Has there been any agency head fired in the value chain? No,” he said.
Rev. Fordjour said President Mahama should take firm action upon his return from the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), stressing the need for leadership capable of addressing the implications of drug trafficking networks.
“We need strong leadership, and we need President Mahama on his return from UNGA to act decisively, and to act as a leader who is fully aware of the repercussions of this cartel,” he said.
He also cautioned against turning the proposed parliamentary inquiry by the Minority into a platform for political point-scoring.
Rev. Fordjour said Members of Parliament should prioritise Ghana’s national interest over partisan considerations when the House is recalled to deliberate on the matter.
The Minority has claimed that major drug seizures linked to Ghana over the past two years have exceeded US$1 billion and has called for investigations into the networks and institutions allegedly involved.
However, the US$1 billion figure remains a claim by the Minority and has not been independently established as a total.
Rev. Fordjour said the parliamentary process should focus on identifying gaps within the system and finding practical solutions rather than intensifying political divisions.
“We are interested in solutions that restore Ghana to its glory,” he said.
