The Member of Parliament for Berekum West, Dickson Kyere-Duah, has urged the government to introduce a comprehensive legal framework to tackle the growing problem of heavy-duty trucks and haulage containers being parked indiscriminately along the shoulders of major highways, especially the Accra-Kumasi Highway.
Speaking in Parliament, the MP described the practice as a major road safety hazard, warning that it continues to endanger motorists and contribute to the rising number of fatal road accidents.
He noted that many crashes involving vehicles parked on highway shoulders have resulted in the loss of lives, making it necessary for authorities to take swift action.
Kyere-Duah proposed the introduction of legislation that would give the relevant state agencies the authority to immediately tow away trucks and other heavy vehicles found parked illegally along highways.
He also recommended that owners of such vehicles should be responsible for paying all towing charges and any additional fines imposed, arguing that strict penalties would discourage the practice.
The MP made the call while contributing to a statement on the floor of Parliament presented by the Member of Parliament for Bibiani–Anhwiaso–Bekwai, Bright Asamoah Brefo.
In his statement, Brefo appealed for urgent measures to address the increasing problem of indiscriminate parking on highways across the country.
Both MPs stressed that stronger enforcement of traffic regulations, backed by clear legislation, is essential to improving road safety.
They believe empowering authorities to remove illegally parked vehicles and sanction offenders would significantly reduce avoidable accidents and help protect the lives of motorists and other road users.
The lawmakers’ appeal comes amid growing concerns over the number of crashes linked to heavy trucks left parked along highways, with road safety advocates repeatedly calling for tougher action to curb the dangerous practice.
