Mfantsipim SHS final-year student commits suicide

Mfantsipim School community is mourning the tragic death of a 17-year-old final-year student whose body was found in an uncompleted building in Cape Coast.

The student, Emmanuel Arthur, was one of the students partaking in this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

His body was discovered at Ola North, a residential area in the Cape Coast metropolis, after a carpenter working near the building alerted the police.

In a statement, the Central Regional Police Command said officers responded to the report on June 11, 2026, and quickly proceeded to the scene.

Investigators examined the area and recovered several items believed to belong to Emmanuel.

These included a black backpack containing learning materials, among them a Geography Paper, and one mock examination paper bearing his name.

Officers also found two mobile phones, an Android phone and a basic handset, along with other personal belongings.

The items helped police trace the deceased to Mfantsipim School. School authorities later confirmed that Emmanuel was a final-year student.

Police subsequently informed his family and invited them to assist with the identification process.

According to investigators, the body had remained at the location for some time before it was discovered and was already in an advanced state of decomposition.

A pathologist at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital examined the remains before authorities released the body to the family for burial.

After the recovery operation, officials fumigated the uncompleted building as part of health and safety measures.

Police investigations have since established that Emmanuel died by suicide.

However, investigators have not yet determined the reasons or circumstances that may have contributed to the incident.

Although authorities have confirmed the cause of death, they say investigations are still ongoing to understand what events may have led to the tragedy.
