Suame Member of Parliament John Darko has denied participating in a settlement between SIC Savings and Loans Company Limited and Equity Savings and Loans Limited that allegedly caused financial losses to SIC.
His denial follows his interrogation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Tuesday, October 13, as part of investigations into the transaction.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, October 14, his lawyers, Darko, Keli-Delataa & Co, said the questioning focused on his role as legal counsel for Equity during its court dispute with SIC and his membership of Equity’s board between 2015 and 2023.
The lawyers maintained that his involvement was limited to the litigation and recovery of part of the judgment awards.
They said he had no role in the subsequent settlement and was unaware of Equity’s decision to transfer land under judicial attachment to Eco Swiss Investment Limited.
According to the statement, Mr Darko had left Equity’s board by September 2023, and his firm had stopped providing legal services to the company over unpaid fees before the settlement took place.
The investigation centres on a July 2024 agreement under which SIC reportedly accepted GH¢5 million to settle a revised judgment debt of GH¢14.85 million. EOCO estimates the alleged financial loss at about GH¢27 million.
The case also involves Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, who has been charged with conspiracy, causing financial loss to a public body and money laundering.
Mr Darko’s lawyers said he remained willing to assist EOCO with its investigations.
