The Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Samuel Nartey George, has issued a strong warning to individuals engaged in illegal sand winning activities within the constituency, stressing that offenders will be arrested and prosecuted.
According to the MP, the indiscriminate extraction of sand continues to pose a serious threat to communities, roads, farmlands and the environment, requiring urgent action to halt the practice before it causes irreversible damage.
He noted that several parts of the constituency have experienced extensive land degradation as a result of illegal sand winning, with some communities increasingly becoming vulnerable to erosion and flooding.
“Those involved in illegal sand winning must desist immediately because the law will take its course. We cannot sit unconcerned while our lands and communities are being destroyed,” he warned.
Mr. George explained that the activities of illegal sand winners not only threaten the environment but also undermine infrastructure development and the livelihoods of residents who depend on agriculture and other land-based economic activities.
“Our roads are being damaged, our lands are being degraded, and our environment is under serious threat because of these illegal activities,” he said.
The MP disclosed that he was working closely with local authorities, traditional leaders, security agencies and relevant state institutions to identify perpetrators and bring them to justice.
“We are collaborating with the police, district authorities and traditional leaders to ensure that those behind these activities are arrested and prosecuted,” he stated.
He further urged residents to support the fight against illegal sand winning by reporting suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
“This fight cannot be won by government alone. Community members must assist by providing information that will help stop the destruction of our environment,” he added.
Mr. George reiterated that development should not come at the expense of environmental sustainability and pledged to continue advocating for stricter enforcement of environmental regulations within the constituency.
“We must pursue development responsibly. Future generations deserve to inherit a safe and sustainable environment, not degraded lands and destroyed ecosystems,” he said.
