GTEC withdraws policy on post-retirement contracts

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has officially cancelled its earlier policy about retirement age and post-retirement contracts for senior lecturers in public universities.

This decision came after the Minister for Education met with leaders of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG).

In a letter dated April 27, 2026, GTEC explained that it is withdrawing the policy it first introduced on October 1, 2025.

“Following a meeting between the Honourable Minister for Education and the leadership of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Honourable Minister has issued a directive to GTEC to immediately withdraw its policy directive dated 1st October, 2025,” the Commission stated.

GTEC said it is taking this step to follow the Minister’s instructions and to make room for more discussions with key groups in the education sector.

“In compliance with the Minister’s directive, and pending further consultations with all relevant stakeholders to ensure broad consensus and institutional sustainability, GTEC hereby announces the immediate withdrawal of the attached policy directive,” the statement said.

The Commission added that new guidelines will be shared after these consultations are completed.

“Further guidance will be communicated following the conclusion of stakeholder consultations,” it added.

The policy that has now been withdrawn focused on retirement age and whether senior academic staff could continue working after retirement in public universities.

The letter was signed by Deputy Director-General Prof. Augustine Ocloo on behalf of the Director-General.

It was also sent to important stakeholders, including vice chancellors of public universities, the Ministry of Education, the Public Services Commission, as well as leaders of UTAG and the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG).
