GRIDCO disaster: Mahama to visit Akosombo Dam today

President John Dramani Mahama is expected to visit the Akosombo Dam on Thursday, April 30, 2026, after a recent fire at a nearby power facility caused outages in parts of the country.

The fire happened at a substation run by Ghana Grid Company. It damaged important equipment and led to a loss of over 1,000 megawatts of electricity, disrupting the power supply and bringing back “dumsor” in several areas.

The visit will give the President a chance to see the situation for himself and understand how serious the damage is.

The government says work is already underway to restore stable power as quickly as possible.

According to Energy Minister John Jinapor, four of the power generation units at the dam are already back in operation.

The remaining units are expected to be fixed and running again later this week.

During the visit, technical experts will brief the President on the repair work so far and explain what is being done to prevent similar problems in the future.

The trip is part of efforts to make sure the situation is handled properly and that power supply across the country returns to normal soon.
