Ghana is not Mahama’s property – Hassan Ayariga on BRICS bid

The Founder and Leader of the All People’s Congress (APC), Hassan Ayariga, has challenged the government’s decision to pursue Ghana’s participation in BRICS, calling for parliamentary scrutiny and wider public consultation.

In a press statement issued in Accra on Saturday, October 17, 2026, Mr Ayariga questioned whether Cabinet’s approval was sufficient for a decision with potentially far-reaching economic and diplomatic implications for the country.

He stressed that Ghana’s sovereignty rests with its citizens and argued that major national decisions should not be left exclusively to the President and Cabinet.

Mr Ayariga said he was not opposed to Ghana establishing stronger economic and diplomatic ties with BRICS countries but insisted that the process must be transparent and comply with constitutional requirements.

He cited Article 75 of the 1992 Constitution, which provides for parliamentary ratification of treaties, agreements and conventions executed by the President on behalf of Ghana.

The APC leader urged the government to present a comprehensive policy document outlining the expected benefits, risks, financial implications and obligations associated with the proposed partnership.

He also called for consultations with Parliament, political parties, civil society organisations, economic experts and business associations before any binding commitments are made.

Mr Ayariga cautioned against replacing dependence on Western economies with reliance on other global powers, insisting that Ghana’s national interest must remain paramount.
