A head porter has been sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment with hard labour by the Torkor Circuit Court located in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region for robbery.
The convicted person, known as Akpalu Prince, entered a guilty plea to the charge and was convicted based on his own admission by the court, which was presided over by Joseph Ofosu Behome.
During the prosecution, Chief Inspector McRae Pomevor informed the court that the complainant is an officer of the Ghana Immigration Service, stationed at Aflao, and resides at Second Low-Cost within the municipality.
The convict, on the other hand, resided in Garapan, a suburb of Aflao.
The prosecution detailed that the incident took place on July 13, 2026, at approximately 6:00 p.m. at Ave Maria Junction in Aflao.
The court was informed that the complainant was standing by the roadside, waiting to board a motorbike while holding her iPhone 12, valued at GH¢3,600, when the convict unexpectedly attacked and snatched the device.
The prosecution stated that the complainant attempted to prevent the convict from escaping by grabbing his shirt, but he forcefully pushed her against a wall and fled the scene.
She then raised an alarm, which led to members of the public chasing after the suspect.
He was ultimately apprehended a short distance from the location of the incident.
A search conducted on the convict resulted in the recovery of the stolen iPhone, which the complainant confirmed as her own property.
The suspect was handed over to the police along with the recovered phone, after which a formal complaint was filed.
Chief Inspector Pomevor noted that the convict confessed to the crime in his caution statement during police questioning.
After thorough investigations, he was charged with robbery and brought before the court.
The court then sentenced him to 10 years’ imprisonment with hard labour.
