Free SHS suppliers to picket at Education Ministry over GH¢50m debt

The National Association of Institutional Suppliers (NAIS) has declared its intention to stage a picket at the Ministry of Education on June 11, 2026, in response to the government’s failure to resolve outstanding payments owed to its members under the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme.

In a statement released on Wednesday, June 3, the association indicated that the protest has become essential due to the extended delay in the payment of approximately GH¢50 million owed to suppliers of uniforms, house dresses, and school clothes for public senior high schools.

NAIS reported that its members have not received payment for supplies delivered since 2023, despite numerous discussions and appeals to the appropriate authorities.

The association emphasised that the non-payment has resulted in considerable financial strain for suppliers and jeopardises their capacity to continue providing vital services to schools.

“The picketing aims not only to draw the government’s attention to our plight but also to urge the immediate release of funds owed to NAIS members,” the statement said.

NAIS expressed its expectation that the demonstration will underscore the urgency of the situation and encourage prompt action from the government to address the outstanding debts.

The association has also requested the media to cover the upcoming protest to help amplify its concerns and attract the attention of key stakeholders to the issue.

The picketing is set to occur at the Ministry of Education on June 11, 2026.
