Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has said he is ready to personally take the Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) if the agency needs his help with its investigations.
His comments come after a reported attempt by people believed to be EOCO officials to arrest Nana Baffour Awuah at the Accra High Court on Wednesday, September 23.
Speaking to journalists, Nana Baffour Awuah said the reported attempt to arrest him was linked to claims that he had failed to respond to invitations from EOCO to assist with investigations into the Ghana Jollof TikTok account.
The MP denied receiving any invitation from EOCO. He also alleged that the attempt to arrest him was meant to silence him because of his public defence of Salomey Baffoe, who is alleged to be an accomplice of the person behind the Ghana Jollof TikTok account.
Speaking at the same press conference, Afenyo-Markin said the Minority leadership was willing to cooperate with EOCO and would present the MP if the agency officially requested his presence.
“EOCO, if you need our brother Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah and you cannot have access to him, inform me. I will present him to you. The Minority leadership is around; none has travelled. We will present him for the right thing to be done. The bullying is not necessary. There’s no point sending a woman to fight,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin described the reported action by EOCO as an excessive use of its powers. He also called on President John Dramani Mahama to intervene and protect his legacy from what he described as attempts to intimidate members of the Minority.
“Mr President, watch these excesses; bring your appointees to order. This is not the Ghana we want, Mr President. EOCO has gained notoriety in abusing its mandate,” he said.
