Two individuals have been granted bail after appearing before the Kotobabi Circuit Court over allegations of circulating a video containing what prosecutors describe as false information involving President John Dramani Mahama.
The accused, Issaka Yahaya, associated with Nsem Fie TV, and Godfred Ansu Damoah, a social media activist, were arrested after allegedly reposting and sharing a viral video in which President Mahama and the National Security Coordinator were purportedly heard discussing an amount of GH¢150 million during a conversation where the president was demanding that amount from the National Security Coordinator.
According to the prosecution, the circulation of the video formed the basis of charges brought against the two men.
They have both been formally charged with conspiracy to publish false information, an offence under Ghana’s laws relating to the dissemination of false news.
When the matter was called before the Kotobabi Circuit Court, the judge admitted both accused persons to bail. Each was granted bail in the sum of GH¢30,000 with two sureties, allowing them to remain out of custody while the case proceeds through the judicial process.
The court is expected to continue hearing the matter at a later date as prosecutors present evidence to support the charges. The accused are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
