The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and the Tema West Municipal Assembly have commenced a demolition exercise today, Tuesday, May 5, 2026, focusing on unauthorised structures in the Golf Course area of the Sakumo Ramsar Site.
This three-day demolition operation is part of renewed efforts by authorities to restore the natural flow of waterways in the region and mitigate the ongoing risk of flooding, particularly with the rainy season approaching.
Officials indicate that the existence of illegal constructions on vital waterways has considerably hindered drainage channels, worsening flooding in nearby communities.
According to the authorities, this exercise is not an abrupt measure but a continuation of ongoing enforcement actions that have been implemented over the years to safeguard the ecologically sensitive Ramsar site.
In spite of repeated warnings, notifications, and previous demolitions, encroachment on the land has persisted, necessitating a more decisive and coordinated response.
The Sakumo Ramsar Site, which is internationally acknowledged for its ecological significance, has long faced threats from human activities, especially unregulated construction.
Authorities have voiced concerns that the growing disregard for planning regulations not only jeopardises the environment but also endangers lives and property due to flooding.
Security personnel are anticipated to be present to ensure order during the demolition exercise, while affected property owners are encouraged to cooperate with officials to prevent confrontations.
