Eight persons have been arrested in a coordinated anti-drug initiative by the Northern Regional Special Operations Team, commonly referred to as “Red Maria,” across various areas of the Tamale Metropolis and its neighbouring communities.

The operation, spearheaded by Chief Inspector Abu Issahaku and involving 44 personnel, is part of the Ghana Police Service’s intensified efforts to combat drug-related activities in the Northern Region.

According to police sources, the operation commenced at Zogbeli, where four individuals were detained.

The team subsequently proceeded to Kukuo, where two additional suspects were apprehended, and then extended the intelligence-led operation to Savelugu, resulting in the arrest of another suspect.

In total, eight individuals are now in custody, with ages ranging from 16 to 25.

During the operation, officers seized 40 wraps of a substance believed to be Indian hemp.

However, police reported that a search of the room belonging to a suspect arrested in Savelugu did not uncover any substances, although he remains under investigation.

All suspects are presently in custody, cooperating with investigations, as police enhance their efforts to dismantle drug networks in the region.
