Janet Asana Nabla, flagbearer of the People’s National Party (PNP), has criticised Communications Minister Sam George over his conduct during proceedings at Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), saying men should show restraint and respect when dealing with women in public discussions.
Speaking on the issue, the former People’s National Convention (PNC) General Secretary said she was surprised to see Sam George involved in a heated exchange with a female colleague during a PAC sitting.
According to her, African culture places a high value on respect for women, and men are expected to remain calm even during disagreements.
“I’m surprised Sam George was arguing with a woman. We all know that in Africa, respecting women is not something to joke about. As a man, you must have emotional control, so that when a woman raises her voice, you stay quiet and listen,” she said on Joy Prime
Her comments follow recent tense exchanges during a sitting of the Public Accounts Committee, where lawmakers engaged in heated arguments while discussing matters linked to the communications sector.
The incident attracted widespread attention on social media, with many Ghanaians sharing different opinions on the conduct of members of the committee.
The Public Accounts Committee is one of Parliament’s key oversight bodies. It is responsible for examining reports from the Auditor-General and questioning public officials over the use of state funds and resources.
Proceedings of the committee are often broadcast live and are closely followed by the public because of the intense questioning and debates that usually take place.
Janet Asana Nabla, who has become known for her outspoken views on national issues, concluded that public officials must show maturity and emotional control, especially when addressing women in public settings.
She stressed that respect for women remains an important cultural value in many African societies.
