GNFS warns public against crowding fire scenes

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in the Volta Region has warned the public against crowding and obstructing emergency scenes during fire outbreaks and rescue operations, saying such behaviour continues to hamper firefighters and put lives at risk.

According to the Regional Command, fire scenes are often crowded with curious residents and onlookers, making it difficult for emergency personnel to carry out rescue and firefighting operations effectively.

Speaking at a durbar, the Volta Regional Fire Commander, ACFO II Joseph Freeman Tetteh, explained that firefighters need enough space during emergencies to move fire tenders, connect hoses, rescue trapped victims and prevent fires from spreading.

He noted that overcrowded scenes often delay emergency response efforts because firefighters sometimes have to spend valuable time clearing access routes before starting operations.

“It is saddening that while we embark on these noble duties, some members of the public attempt to disrupt our good intentions by creating all manner of confusion at fire grounds,” he said.

ACFO II Tetteh also stated that despite the logistical challenges facing the Service nationwide, the Volta Regional Command has kept its fire tenders in good condition to ensure a quick response to emergencies across the region.
