Coach Ocansey unhappy with Black Starlets’ wastefulness in Togo victory

Black Starlets head coach Kassim Ocansey has challenged his players to improve their finishing despite Ghana’s 1-0 victory over Togo in their opening match at the 2026 WAFU Zone B U-17 Championship in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

David Kwarteng scored the decisive goal in the seventh minute to secure all three points for Ghana in the Group A encounter on Saturday.

However, Ocansey was not entirely satisfied with his team’s performance, particularly their inability to convert several scoring opportunities that could have produced a more comfortable victory.

“We won, but I expected more from my boys,” the coach said after the match.

“We created good chances, but we couldn’t convert. I am happy we have the three points, but we could have done better with the chances we created,” he added.

Despite his concerns, Ocansey expressed confidence in the attacking quality of his squad, believing the team could score more goals if the players become more clinical in front of goal.

“If we are able to convert the chances we create, we can get three or four goals in every game. We’ll work on that ahead of our next game,” he stated.

The victory gives the Black Starlets a positive start to their campaign as they pursue qualification for the 2027 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations through the WAFU Zone B competition.

Ghana currently leads Group A following their opening-day triumph, while hosts Burkina Faso and Benin played out a goalless draw in the other group fixture.

The Starlets will face Benin today, Tuesday, October 13, in their second group match, with Ocansey expected to work on the team’s finishing as they seek another victory to strengthen their qualification hopes.
