The Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has criticised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the appointment of Emelia Agbenyo as a Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), arguing that her political background raises concerns about the independence of the electoral management body.
Speaking during an interview on Monday, October 12, Miracles Aboagye accused the governing party of weakening Ghana’s democratic principles through the appointment.
He questioned Ms Agbenyo’s suitability for the position, citing what he described as her longstanding association with the NDC and previous political roles.
According to him, Ms Agbenyo served as a special assistant to Ibrahim Ayariga when he was Deputy Education Minister during former President John Mahama’s first administration.
Mr Aboagye also alleged that she currently holds a partisan political appointment and referred to messages he attributed to her in support of president Mahama during the 2020 and 2024 election campaigns.
He argued that such associations could undermine public confidence in her ability to perform her duties independently.
“It’s a shame how low they are sinking this democracy that we’ve all been fighting for and working towards its growth,” he said.
The NPP communications director maintained that individuals appointed to oversee elections must demonstrate impartiality and be free from partisan influence.
He further questioned the rationale behind the nomination, insisting that the Electoral Commission’s credibility depends not only on the independence of its officials but also on public confidence in their neutrality.
