NPP to elect national executives today

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) will today, Saturday, October 3, elect its national executives at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

A total of 7,163 delegates from across the country are expected to participate in the National Delegates Congress, which forms part of the party’s ongoing reorganisation ahead of the 2028 general election.

The Electoral Commission (EC) will supervise the elections, while the NPP’s National Officers Elections Committee (NOEC) oversees the party’s internal arrangements.

The EC says preparations have been completed, with ballot papers and other electoral materials ready for the exercise.

Delegates will elect national officers for nine positions: National Chairperson, Vice-Chairpersons, General Secretary, National Organiser, National Treasurer, National Youth Organiser, National Women’s Organiser, National Nasara Organiser and National Communications Director.

The National Chairperson race features John Boadu, Sammy Crabbe, Paul Afoko and Boakye Agyarko.

The Vice-Chairperson contest has 13 candidates, with delegates expected to select three. The three candidates with the highest votes will assume the First, Second and Third Vice-Chairperson positions under the existing arrangement.

The General Secretary race features Sylvester Tetteh, Eugene Boakye Antwi, Justin Frimpong Kodua and Dr Charles Dwamena, while seven candidates remain in the National Organiser contest following the withdrawal of Salam Mustapha.

The National Women’s Organiser position is a two-way contest between Hajia Safia Mohammed and Mavis Hawa Koomson.

Dennis Miracles Aboagye is the sole candidate for National Communications Director.

The party has established 31 voting centres within the Baba Yara Sports Stadium to facilitate the process and prevent voting from extending into the night.

Twenty-one centres will handle the elections for National Chairperson, Vice-Chairpersons, General Secretary, National Organiser and National Treasurer.

The remaining 10 centres will cater for the party’s wing elections, comprising five centres for the National Youth Organiser election, three for the Women’s Organiser contest and two for the Nasara election.

No more than 400 delegates will be assigned to each centre, with EC officials supervising the voting and accredited agents representing the various candidates observing the process.

Voting is scheduled to begin at noon after delegates have considered proposed amendments to portions of the NPP constitution.

Among the proposed amendments are changes concerning the leadership of the party, the election of Vice-Chairpersons, additional Vice-Chairperson positions, Deputy Communications Officer positions and the status of the IT Officer as an executive position.

The EC has also cautioned delegates against taking photographs of their marked ballot papers or directing others on how to vote.

Security has been heightened in Kumasi ahead of the conference, with between 3,000 and 4,000 police personnel deployed to manage traffic and provide security around the stadium and at accommodation centres for delegates and guests.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has also announced temporary road closures and traffic diversions around the Baba Yara Sports Stadium to facilitate the event.
