Madrid demand Barcelona titles be stripped over Negreira case

Real Madrid has submitted extensive documentation to UEFA seeking disciplinary action against Barcelona over the long-running Negreira case.

The Madrid-based club has called for UEFA to take appropriate measures over payments made by Barcelona to companies linked to José María Enríquez Negreira, a former vice-president of Spain’s Technical Committee of Referees.

The payments, which reportedly amounted to about €8.4 million, were made between 2001 and 2018. The case has been under investigation in Spain, while UEFA has also maintained a separate disciplinary process.

UEFA confirmed on October 1 that it had received a substantial amount of documentation from Real Madrid and that its ethics and disciplinary inspectors would consider the material as part of the ongoing investigation.

Real Madrid said the documents contain evidence concerning what it considers serious issues affecting the integrity of competitions and confidence in the refereeing system.

The club has urged UEFA to proceed with the investigation as quickly as possible and allow the relevant bodies to determine any appropriate sanctions.

Reports in Spain indicate that Real Madrid are seeking severe sporting consequences for Barcelona, including action relating to titles won during the period covered by the investigation.

However, Barcelona has disputed reports that UEFA has reopened or launched a new case against the club. The Catalan side said the UEFA proceedings began in 2023 and have remained ongoing, with the latest Real Madrid documents simply being added to the existing investigation.
