Carlos Queiroz has taken full responsibility for Ghana’s disappointing 4-2 defeat to The Gambia, urging supporters to continue backing the Black Stars despite the setback.
Ghana surrendered a two-goal lead at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, suffering their second consecutive defeat in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Speaking after the Group C encounter, Queiroz apologised to the fans and admitted that his team failed to maintain control after taking a commanding early advantage.
“There is not much to say today after the terrible result for us. I, the staff, all the players, we are deeply sad,” he said.
The Portuguese coach said criticism should be directed at him rather than the players, insisting that the squad still has what it takes to recover and fight for qualification.
“If there is one person who takes the responsibility of the result, it is me,” Queiroz stated.
He also dismissed calls for his resignation, arguing that his departure alone would not address the broader challenges facing Ghana football.
According to Queiroz, the Black Stars are dealing with an unusually high number of absences, with 24 players from the national A team reportedly unavailable because of injuries and other circumstances.
Despite the defeat, he maintained that Ghana can still turn its campaign around.
“We have to be better prepared, better organised for the next games and win the next games,” he said.
