The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced that over 15,000 aspirants have been approved to participate in its forthcoming constituency executive elections, with approximately 480 candidates running without opposition.
The party’s Director of Elections and IT, Mahdi Gibril, reported that merely about 25 aspirants were rejected during the screening process, resulting in more than 15,000 qualified candidates throughout the nation.
Speaking in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on Citi News, Mr Gibril stated that these numbers represent the largest quantity of aspirants ever documented for the party’s constituency executive elections.
“From what we receive as submitted, we’re talking about almost 15,000-plus that have been able to submit their forms for the elections,” he said.
“However, by the end of the vetting, just about only 25 people were disqualified. So we don’t have a huge number that have been disqualified across the country. So we are still within the 15,000 who are now our candidates for the election.”
Mr Gibril indicated that approximately 480 candidates will run for their respective positions without facing competitors.
He observed that the substantial number of aspirants demonstrates heightened enthusiasm for constituency-level roles within the NDC.
“This is also one of the largest numbers for the party where the interest is high,” he said.
Mr Gibril attributed the surge in interest partly to the NDC’s return to power, though he emphasized that this marks the inaugural occasion the party is conducting constituency executive elections while serving in government.
“If you compare the data, you realise that this time around the interest of people to contest party positions has gone high,” he said.
Candidates declared unopposed are automatically considered elected, whereas those encountering opposition have commenced their campaign activities in preparation for the elections.
