The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has explained the legal basis for delinquency charges imposed on motorists who fail to renew their driver’s licences before they expire.
In a statement issued on September 24, 2026, the Authority said motorists are responsible for ensuring their licences remain valid and should renew them before the expiry date.
The DVLA cited Regulation 46(1) of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2026 (LI 2519), which permits licence renewal within one month before expiry upon payment of the prescribed fee.
Under the regulations, driver’s licences must be renewed every two years and replaced after six years from the date of issue.
The Authority also said licence holders must personally complete the renewal process after passing an eye test and presenting evidence of training from a certified driver training institution.
It explained that the Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Regulations, 2025 (LI 2512) provide for additional charges when licences are not renewed before their expiry.
For non-renewal involving one sticker, the delinquency charge is GH¢52, while two stickers attract GH¢104.
For expired licences, motorists pay GH¢75 for renewals between seven and 12 months, GH¢111 for periods above one year up to two years, and GH¢148 for renewals exceeding two years.
The DVLA urged motorists to renew their licences on time to avoid the additional charges.
It said SMS reminders are sent to licence holders using the phone numbers provided during the application process, beginning one month before expiry and again a few weeks later.
The Authority said the measures form part of efforts to maintain high driving standards and urged motorists to comply with the renewal requirements.
