Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has held discussions with traders, importers and other business people on challenges affecting trade and the wider business environment in Ghana.
The meeting formed part of his ongoing policy dialogue series, through which he is engaging various groups to gather views on issues affecting their sectors and possible policy solutions.
According to Dr Bawumia, members of the Trade Advocacy Group outlined several challenges confronting businesses during the meeting.
These included what the group described as high and arbitrary import duties, rising demurrage costs and the high cost of renting shops.
The traders also raised concerns about high taxes and difficulties in accessing credit, which they said continue to affect their ability to operate and expand their businesses.
Dr Bawumia said the discussions focused largely on policies that could address these challenges and create a more supportive environment for businesses.
He noted that reducing some of the difficulties faced by traders and importers could help make it easier to do business, expand economic opportunities and create jobs.
The former Vice President also said Ghana must work towards strengthening its position as a major trade hub in the sub-region.
He expressed appreciation to the Trade Advocacy Group for participating in the engagement and for sharing ideas on how the business environment could be improved.
“My thanks to the Trade Advocacy Group for their attendance of the meeting and many of the ideas they put on the table,” Dr Bawumia said.
