Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 34, bringing an end to a memorable career with the Teranga Lions.
Mendy leaves the national team after making 59 appearances for Senegal and establishing himself as one of the country’s most important goalkeepers in recent years.
One of the biggest moments of his international career came at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon. Mendy played a key role as Senegal won their first-ever AFCON title after defeating Egypt on penalties in the final.
He was also named the tournament’s best goalkeeper following his impressive performances throughout the competition.
Mendy went on to represent Senegal at the 2022 and 2026 FIFA World Cups. He was also involved in Senegal’s 2025 AFCON campaign, although the outcome of that tournament has since been affected by a CAF disciplinary decision that awarded the title to Morocco.
His decision to retire comes at a time when he continues to receive recognition for his performances at club level.
Mendy has been nominated for the 2026 Yashin Trophy, which is awarded to the best goalkeeper in the world. He is among 10 nominees for this year’s award alongside fellow African goalkeepers Yassine Bounou of Morocco and Cape Verde’s Vozinha.
The goalkeeper has also enjoyed success with his clubs. He won the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea in 2021 before moving to Saudi Arabia to join Al-Ahli.
His international retirement marks the end of an important chapter in his career and in Senegal’s recent football history.
