UEFA has handed disciplinary sanctions to Fenerbahce players Matteo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood after the controversial scenes following their Champions League play-off victory over Lyon.
Guendouzi received the heavier punishment after being found responsible for insulting people at the match, provoking spectators and breaching UEFA’s rules on decent conduct.
UEFA handed him a four-match ban in UEFA club competitions and a €50,000 fine.
However, two of the four matches have been suspended for a one-year probationary period. This means the French midfielder will serve an immediate two-match suspension this season.
Greenwood was also punished for his conduct during the incident. The England forward received a €30,000 fine and a one-match suspension.
His ban has been suspended for one year, meaning he will not immediately miss a Champions League match unless he commits another offence during the probationary period.
The sanctions relate to events after Fenerbahce defeated Lyon 2-1 in the second leg of their Champions League play-off. The Turkish club advanced to the league phase with a 3-2 aggregate victory.
Tensions reportedly increased after the final whistle, with Guendouzi accused of making provocative gestures towards Lyon supporters.
The situation later developed into a confrontation involving players and members of the coaching staff from both teams.
UEFA also imposed sanctions on both clubs over crowd disturbances and other incidents during the match. Lyon goalkeeping coach Antonio Ferreira received a five-match suspension, with two matches suspended, after being found responsible for serious assault.
