Black Princesses defender Alexandra Tay is confident Ghana can make history at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland as she prepares for her second appearance at the tournament.
The centre-back featured for Ghana at the 2024 edition in Colombia and believes the experience has helped her develop as a player.
She is now hoping to use that experience to help the Black Princesses progress beyond the group stage for the first time.
Tay said the team has enjoyed a strong training camp and believes there is a high level of motivation within the squad ahead of the tournament.
The defender also stressed the importance of concentrating on one match at a time, with Ghana set to begin their campaign against Ecuador on Sunday, September 6, 2026.
She said her experience in Colombia taught her not to look too far ahead and that the opening match must remain the team’s immediate priority.
Tay also outlined the role she hopes to play in the squad, saying she has worked to improve her composure and communication, particularly as a centre-back. She believes those qualities can help the team remain organised during matches.
Ghana is making their eighth consecutive appearance at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, but have never advanced beyond the group stage.
The Black Princesses were eliminated in the group phase at the 2024 tournament despite recording a 3-1 victory over New Zealand in their final match.
Tay is one of three players returning to the tournament from Ghana’s 2024 squad, alongside Jennifer Dawah and goalkeeper Najat Abdul Salam. She has also recently been handed the number 14 shirt for the Poland tournament.
After Ecuador, Ghana will face Korea Republic and France in Group E as they chase a historic place in the knockout stage.
