Bawumia leads potential NDC candidates for 2028 in new poll

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has emerged as the leading candidate in hypothetical 2028 presidential matchups against seven potential candidates from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), according to a new nationwide voter perception survey.

The survey, conducted between July 27 and August 7, 2026, involved 16,963 respondents across all 276 constituencies and the 16 regions of Ghana.

According to the findings, Dr. Bawumia leads in all seven hypothetical contests tested, recording between 45.7% and 49.9% of voter support depending on the NDC candidate he is matched against.

His lead also extends beyond the traditional strongholds of his New Patriotic Party (NPP). The survey indicates that he leads in between nine and 11 of Ghana’s 16 regions across the different matchups.

The results suggest that Dr. Bawumia currently enjoys a broad national base as the country gradually moves towards the 2028 general elections.

However, the researchers cautioned that the findings should not be regarded as a prediction of the 2028 election.

They noted that voter preferences could change significantly as political, economic and social conditions develop over the coming years.

The survey also examined the qualities voters consider important when choosing Ghana’s next President. Honesty and integrity ranked highest among the qualities identified by respondents.

The ability to create jobs and competence in managing the economy were also identified as major factors likely to influence voters.

The survey was conducted through face-to-face interviews and covered all 276 constituencies. It had a reported confidence level of 99% and a margin of error of plus or minus one percent.

The findings indicate that, while the 2028 race remains open, Dr. Bawumia currently holds a strong position against the potential NDC contenders tested.

The survey was conducted by Africa Policy Lens, which has published detailed national and regional results from the study.
