A fire has destroyed the ICT laboratory at the Gushegu Midwifery Training School in the Northern Region, destroying computers, furniture and other items at the facility.
The fire reportedly started around 6 a.m. on Monday and quickly spread through the block, which also housed administrative offices and a staff common room.
School authorities described the facility as an important part of the institution, particularly because it serves as a centre for online external examinations.
Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service station in Yendi were called to assist in containing the blaze. Community members, staff and students also joined efforts to prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the school.
The Gushegu Municipal Chief Executive, Abdul Hafiz Adam, said the municipality does not have a fire station, forcing authorities to seek assistance from Yendi, which is about 40 miles away.
He commended residents, staff and students for helping to control the situation before the arrival of the firefighters.
No deaths have been reported in connection with the incident. However, a few people reportedly suffered minor injuries while helping to contain the fire.
The extent of the damage is expected to affect academic activities at the school. Authorities are particularly concerned about the impact on students preparing to take their professional licensure examinations, as the destroyed facility was used for online examinations.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigations are expected to establish what triggered the outbreak.
