WAFCON 2026: Cameroon stars dominate individual awards

Cameroon’s historic triumph at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations has been followed by a strong showing in the tournament’s individual awards, with several members of the champion team receiving major honours.

The Indomitable Lionesses lifted their first-ever WAFCON trophy after defeating Malawi 3-0 in the final in Rabat on Sunday. Marie Ngah Manga was the star of the final, scoring twice as Cameroon produced a dominant performance to claim the title.

Ngah Manga was subsequently named Player of the Final for her outstanding contribution. Her two goals helped Cameroon take control of the match and complete a historic campaign.

Cameroon’s success also extended to the tournament’s major individual awards. Midfielder Monique Ngock was named Player of the Tournament after playing an important role in the team’s successful campaign.

Her performances in midfield helped Cameroon maintain control and balance throughout the competition.

Goalkeeper Michaely Bihina was also recognised as the tournament’s Best Goalkeeper. She played a crucial role in Cameroon’s run to the final, particularly in the semi-final against hosts Morocco, where her penalty-saving heroics helped the Lionesses progress after a goalless match.

Malawi’s Temwa Chawinga took the Golden Boot after finishing the tournament with five goals. Her performances helped the Scorchers reach the final in their first appearance at the competition.

Chawinga’s achievement was especially notable as she finished level on goals with other leading scorers but won the award on the tiebreaker through her assists.
