The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has declared an indefinite strike effective Monday, August 10, 2026.
The association, which represents non-teaching staff at the university, is protesting what it describes as unfair differences in allowances and poor working conditions.
According to GAUA Secretary, Phanuel Seli Kwadzo Asense, the highest-ranked non-teaching staff member receives an allowance that is almost 50% lower than what the lowest-ranked teaching staff member receives.
He said the disparity is affecting the welfare of administrators and making it difficult for them to provide effective services.
“If you pick the least teaching staff member and compare the allowance offered to them compared to the highest non-teaching staff member, there is a disparity of not less than 50%,” he said.
The decision to strike was taken during an emergency meeting where members discussed their concerns and agreed to begin the industrial action.
The strike has already affected some services at the university, with administrative offices at the IT, Accounting and Development departments, as well as the university’s hospitals, reportedly shut down.
Mr Asense said the association had spent several months engaging the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and other government agencies to resolve the issue, but the discussions had not produced a solution.
He said the administrators would continue the strike until their concerns were addressed.
“If government is a listening one and would have our concerns addressed, we will consider coming back. We are not fighting the university or the teaching staff,” he said.
GAUA said a monitoring team will be deployed in the coming days to ensure that members comply with the industrial action.
