A 26-year-old cobbler, Thomas Opoku, popularly known as Akwasi Dekye, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for robbing a student at gunpoint in the Ashanti Region.
The Bekwai Circuit Court found Opoku guilty of conspiracy to commit a crime and robbery on Thursday, August 6, 2026.
According to the prosecution, Opoku and another suspect, Agye Nyame, who is currently on the run, attacked Divine Adu Boaheng near the Kokofu Nursing Training School on June 12, 2026.
The incident occurred around 12:15 a.m., while the victim was returning from Bedomaise.
The court heard that the two suspects were armed with a single-barrel gun and took an Infinix Smart 6 mobile phone valued at GH¢1,400 and GH¢400 in cash from the victim.
Opoku was arrested on June 18 at the Kokofu Lorry Station after the victim identified him as one of the attackers.
Police later recovered the stolen phone from him. According to the prosecution, Opoku also admitted the offence in his caution statement.
Presiding Judge, His Honour Isaac Appiatu, subsequently sentenced Opoku to 15 years in prison.
Meanwhile, police say efforts are ongoing to arrest the second suspect, Agye Nyame, who remains at large.
