Black Satellites head coach Maxwell Konadu has revealed that Ghana will not rely on the same group of players that featured at the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship when the country hosts the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.
The announcement follows Ghana’s disappointing group-stage exit from the WAFU B tournament in Côte d’Ivoire, where the Black Satellites finished third in Group B after a goalless draw with Togo.
Although Ghana produced encouraging performances and had a goal disallowed in their final match, they failed to qualify for the semi-finals.
Speaking after the game, coach Maxwell Konadu said the tournament had served its purpose by helping the technical team assess the abilities of several home-based players.
“We came here to win, but it didn’t work out. We will reorganise ourselves. Definitely, we will not present the same team for the AFCON next year,” he said.
The former Ghana international explained that the coaching staff deliberately selected mostly locally based players to evaluate their readiness for international football.
According to him, the competition helped identify players who have the quality to remain in the team and those who need more development.
He noted that some players impressed with their performances and proved they deserve another opportunity, while others could miss out as the technical team prepares a stronger squad for the continental championship.
Maxwell Konadu believes the coming months will be crucial as Ghana scouts additional talents from the domestic league and players based abroad to strengthen the team ahead of the tournament.
