Ten people have been arrested by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) for allegedly selling cannabis and cannabis-infused drinks during the SRC Week celebrations at Koforidua Technical University (KTU) in the New Juaben South Municipality.
The suspects, made up of nine men and one woman, were arrested on the night of Friday, July 31, after NACOC officers acted on intelligence about suspected drug-related activities on the university campus.
According to NACOC, the intelligence-led operation led to the seizure of suspected cannabis and several food and drink products believed to have been mixed with the drug. Items recovered included wraps of suspected cannabis, cups of “abele” ice cream, bottles of pineapple juice, sobolo, fresh palm wine, and other beverages.
NACOC said preliminary field tests carried out on the seized items confirmed the presence of cannabis. This strengthened suspicions that the products were being sold or shared with people attending the SRC Week celebrations.
The ten suspects are currently helping with investigations as NACOC works to determine the full extent of the alleged operation and identify anyone else who may be involved.
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to protecting educational institutions from drug-related activities and urged students and the public to remain vigilant by reporting suspicious behaviour to the appropriate authorities.
