Several lower primary school children were injured after a tipper truck crashed into the back of a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter school bus on the Dzorwulu–Accra Mall road.
The bus was carrying about 11 children who were returning from an excursion when the accident happened.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), in a video shared on Facebook, confirmed that the crash involved the tipper truck and the school bus.
Eyewitnesses told Citi News that one of the children is in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Police Hospital, while the other 10 children are receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital.
Assistant Divisional Officer (ADO I) Alex King Nartey of the GNFS said the tipper truck crashed into the rear of the Sprinter bus. However, he said the exact cause of the accident has not yet been determined.
“This is the Fiesta Royale to Accra Mall stretch, where a tipper truck has run into a minibus containing children,” he said.
Videos from the scene showed the force of the crash. Blood stains could be seen inside the bus, along with a child’s school bag that had been left behind. Both vehicles also suffered extensive damage.
ADO I Nartey said officers from the GNFS National Headquarters Rescue Team arrived at the scene to assess the situation and help separate the two vehicles involved in the crash.
“It looks like it is a Sprinter bus that was containing school children. It is believed that they had gone for an excursion, and this is the level of the impact,” he added.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the total number of people injured, the full condition of the children, or whether there have been any deaths.
Investigations are ongoing to determine what caused the accident, while emergency responders continue to assess the scene.
