Ghana’s Black Queens have started their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign on a strong note after recording a convincing 2-0 victory over Cape Verde in their opening Group C match.
The game, played at the Moulay Rachid Stadium on Wednesday, saw the Ghanaian side dominate from the early stages as they controlled possession, created several scoring opportunities and showed their determination to make a positive start to the tournament.
The Black Queens took control of the match from the first whistle, with their attacking players constantly putting pressure on the Cape Verde defence. Their persistence was rewarded in the first half when Doris Boaduwaa opened the scoring with a composed finish.
Boaduwaa capitalised on a well-coordinated team move and calmly placed the ball beyond the goalkeeper to give Ghana a deserved advantage before the break.
After the restart, Coach Kim Lars Björkegren’s team maintained their intensity and continued to dictate the pace of the game. The Queens displayed confidence in possession, while their defensive organisation prevented Cape Verde from creating clear goal-scoring chances.
Ghana eventually extended their lead after a dangerous ball played into the Cape Verde penalty area resulted in an own goal. A defensive attempt to clear the delivery went wrong, allowing the Black Queens to secure a comfortable two-goal cushion.
With the advantage firmly in their hands, Ghana managed the closing stages of the match with maturity. The defence remained disciplined, while goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan made important contributions to ensure the team finished the game with a clean sheet.
The victory gives the Black Queens all three points and places them in a strong position in Group C as they continue their quest for success at the continental tournament.
The result also provides a major confidence boost for the team and their technical handlers ahead of their remaining group matches. Having shown strength in attack and stability in defence, the Black Queens will be hoping to build on the impressive opening performance as they target a deep run at WAFCON 2026.
