Teacher sentenced to 12 years for defiling 12-year-old student

A 32-year-old French language teacher, Hondana Mensah, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison by the Odumase Krobo Circuit Court after being found guilty of defiling a 12-year-old student.

The court heard that the incident occurred at the teacher’s residence during an extra classes session.

Mensah, who was also the victim’s class teacher, allegedly used his position of authority to abuse the young student and later threatened her with academic failure if she reported the incident.

According to reports, the teacher warned the student that he would fail her in her end-of-term examinations if she disclosed the abuse to anyone.

The threat was allegedly intended to prevent the victim from seeking help or reporting the matter to the appropriate authorities.

The court, after considering the evidence presented, handed Mensah a 12-year custodial sentence, sending a strong warning against sexual offences involving children and abuse of trust by persons in positions of responsibility.

Child rights advocates have consistently called for tougher action against perpetrators of child sexual abuse, particularly in schools where teachers are expected to provide protection, guidance and support to students.

Under Ghana’s laws, defilement, defined as having sexual intercourse with a person below the age of 16, is a serious criminal offence.

The Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) provides severe penalties for offenders convicted of such acts, especially when the victim is a child.

The case has again raised concerns about the safety of children in educational environments and the need for stronger child protection measures in schools.

Experts have urged parents, teachers and school authorities to remain vigilant and create safe channels for children to report abuse without fear of intimidation or punishment.

They have also stressed the importance of educating children about personal safety, encouraging open communication and ensuring that allegations of abuse are handled quickly and responsibly.
