Xenophobic attacks: We are not going anywhere – MTN Ghana assures

MTN Ghana says it has no plans to leave the country despite concerns linked to recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa, where its parent company is based.

The company’s Chief Internal Audit and Forensics Officer, Michael Gbewonyo, reaffirmed MTN Ghana’s long-term commitment to the country, describing Ghana as one of its most important markets.

He said the telecom giant remains dedicated to supporting Ghana’s socio-economic growth, a commitment it has demonstrated over the past three decades.

Mr Gbewonyo gave the assurance during the 2026 MTN Media and Stakeholder Forum in Takoradi, which brought together journalists from the Central and Western Regions.

“MTN is here to stay. We are not going anywhere,” he said, dismissing speculation that the company might reconsider its operations in Ghana because of the unrest in South Africa.

He stressed that MTN will continue investing in network expansion, promoting digital inclusion, creating jobs, and working closely with the government and other partners to advance Ghana’s digital and economic development.

Mr Gbewonyo highlighted the company’s contributions to the country, including the payment of taxes, job creation, and corporate social responsibility initiatives.

Looking back on MTN’s 30 years of operations in the country, he thanked customers, employees, business partners, communities, the media, and other stakeholders for their continued support and trust.

According to him, the company’s success has not only been driven by business growth but also by its commitment to accountability, transparency, responsible corporate practices, and customer-focused service delivery.

He added that feedback and constructive criticism from stakeholders have helped MTN improve its services, bridge the digital divide, support businesses, and connect more people across the country.

Mr Gbewonyo also revealed that MTN contributes about six per cent of Ghana’s total tax revenue, underlining the company’s significant role in the national economy.

“Through the MTN Ghana Foundation, thousands of young people have received scholarships and support to pursue their dreams.”

“In communities across the Western and Central Regions and beyond, our investments in health, education, and economic empowerment are changing lives every day.”

“We are proud of our achievements, not because of the size of our business, but because of the impact we have made together,” he added.

He assured stakeholders that MTN would continue building on the progress made over the past 30 years while working with partners to create even greater impact across Ghana.
